Youth Justice Milwaukee co-founders Jeffrey Roman and Sharlen Moore released the following statement on the report out of Lincoln Hills that guards used pepper spray and chemical agents on youth more than 100 times in the first six months of 2017:
“Another day, another atrocity revealed at Lincoln Hills. Despite court orders and leadership changes, the Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake youth prisons are still abusing young people at shocking rates. An institution that must rely on pepper-spraying young people over 100 times in six months – 12 times against a single boy – is simply out of control. As parents and Milwaukee community members, we will not stand for such child abuse committed in our names.
Enough is enough! The adults our state entrusted to rehabilitate our youth and keep them safe are torturing them instead. This horrible facility must be closed immediately.”
Youth Justice Milwaukee is a broad-based campaign advocating for community-based, family-centered, restorative programs as an alternative to locking up children in Wisconsin’s youth prisons. Youth Justice Milwaukee represents a coalition of persons who were incarcerated as youth, families of youth who are or were incarcerated, service providers, and local and national youth justice advocates.
